Search Engine Optimisation Defined

1. Research: Know what your target market is for your product or service and crucially what visitors will use as a search phrase to locate information regarding that product or service.

2. Keywords & Key Phrases: Building a list of keywords and key phrases relating to your product or service should be one of the first tasks to be completed when optimising a website. The list should include many variations and combinations of words, many of these would have been found during the research phase.

3. Domain Names: If possible acquiring a domain name containing keywords or a key phrase adds great weight to a website. Needless to say the content must be relevant.

4. Web Page Naming: At U Internet Ltd, we firmly believe in providing the Search Engines with as much information \ help regarding a web pages contents as possible. So the logical choice is to use the key phrase as the web page name. The content must contain relevant information relating to the web page name.

5. Title Tag: Very important must have the key phrase \ words as the first words of the tag. Should not contain any more than 6 - 7 words.

6. Meta Tag - Description: Not as important as it used to be. Use this tag to write a brief description of the web page content \ purpose. Use key words \ phrases once or twice. MSN and Yahoo use this tag in there search results.

7. Meta Tag - Keywords: Even less important, Google pays little attention, but necessary all the same. Enter key words \ phrases sensibly between 10 and 15 is sufficient make sure your selected words or phrase are listed first.

8. H1 & H2 Heading Tags: When using H1 & H2 be sure to use content relevant Keywords or Key Phrases within these tags

9. Content is King, is a phrase often used with Search Engine Optimisation, it 's true, a web sites content should provide the visitor with the information they are searching for quickly and clearly. But what, I hear you say, has this got to do with Search Engine Optimisation. Well, the more relevant the content on your web site the more search engines like Google will list it in there Search Engine Results Pages (SERP's).

9a. Keyword \ Key Phrase Balance: The next method is to find the correct balance of keywords and phrases in the content of a web page and utilising them efficiently. This is the art of calculating how many keywords should exists in your content compared to the search phrase being used to find this information.

9. Internal Linking: Creating a web site that can be easily navigated is very important as the visitors to your site will be searching for information, a service or a product. If they are unable to find it quickly and easily they may move to another web site or try searching again. Regarding SEO Internal linking can be used to add keywords or key phrases by using the <title> tag contained in the hyperlink. This can be seen when hovering the mouse pointer above a link.

10. Coding: All the high listed web site use either XHTML or HTML. The reason for this is the code created allows the search engine robots \ spiders to quickly and efficiently scan web pages.

11. Back Links: Possibly one of the most important parts of SEO. Also one of the hardest. Negotiating with other webmasters to provide a text back link is a fine art and requires a lot of patents. The key points to remember are to attain back links from reputable web sites which contain information relating to your products or services.

12. Web Site Hosting: Selecting the right hosting company is a task in its own. There are many choices some of which are very cheap. Beware of the cheap hosting packages as they will, invariable be, use a shared IP address with as many as 10,000 other web sites. From an SEO perspective if any of these web sites are banned by the search engines due to illegal SEO activities this will have an impact on a web site sharing the same IP address. The best option, depending on how much money is available, is to use a dedicated server with a static IP address. This way only your web site will be listed to that IP address.

14. Google Analytics: The use of Google Analytics on a web site is key to knowing who, when where and how visitors are accessing your web site.

15. Site maps: A site map will help the search engines navigate and therefore index your web site quickly. Anything that can be done to help the search engines will help your web site. Google robots, for instance, look for sitemap.xml in a web site as they are able to index a site faster using the information.

Building Back links

The Back linking techniques described here are aimed at webmasters \ web site owners who would like to know the best methods for building Back links to a web site.

Back Links

Anchor Text: A back link from a reputable Page Ranked (PR) web site which uses a keyword or key phrase as a link back to a web site gives the site being linked to a vote or authority on the chosen key words or key phrases. This is very important and will help a web sites ranking enormously.

Relevant Site Links: Web sites that contain similar information who provide a link to a similar site provide the site being linked to authority on the subject, services or products described in the web site. These links are very useful as this indicates that the competition is voting for your web site.

Best Domain Back Links: The best links a web site can receive are from .edu or .gov web sites as these are more reputable than any other web site. These are the hardest back links to obtain.

Number of Back links: Some SEO specialists say the more the better but I don't agree as the quality and origin of a back link is far more important then amount of back links. I advise, do your research and find the most suitable sites to obtain back links from and start negotiating.

Back link Age: For a new web site this is not so important but as a web site becomes more established obtaining back links will become easier as other newer sites may request a link. This provides an opportunity to exchange links, ensure that all requests for back links from your site are investigated as linking to a bad web site could have serious ranking implications.

Directories: All web sites should try and get listed in DMOZ, not always possible but always worth a try. Yahoo on the other hand, will cost $299 per annum to get listed but it is well worth it. Directories with a PR0 are not really any good unless they contain links to web sites containing similar information, products or services.

Excessive Linking Linking from the same site many times will have a negative impact as this will be seen as link spamming.

Outbound Links

Number of Outbound Links The number of outbound links should be kept to a minimum with no more than two per page. Creating a Links or Resources page with relevant links about the content of a web site is ok. This may have a negative impact on your rankings. Never link back to a link farm as this will de-value a web site.
